About

Awesome Digital History is a curated directory to support historical research with an emphasis on digital history.

The directory is built for quick evaluation. Each resource combines a short awesome-list description, an entry page with editorial context, and a screenshot so you can judge relevance faster.

You can browse the collection with free-text search and filters for section, region, type, and language.

Project Responsibility

Awesome Digital History is a community effort by historians, archivists, librarians, educators, students, and digital humanities practitioners, coordinated by Dr. Moritz Maehr.

The project is loosely connected to the Digital History Network Switzerland and welcomes contributions from people working with digital historical sources, tools, and teaching resources.

Editorial decisions should be transparent. Additions, corrections, and removals are discussed through GitHub issues and pull requests whenever possible, and entry metadata records provenance such as date added, authorship, and review status.

Scope

The focus is on digitally accessible sources, search portals, and learning resources that support historical research workflows.

Some resources are broad institutional platforms, while others document a single project, collection, or teaching resource. Reuse conditions differ from site to site, but all listed entries should add value for digital historical scholarship.

How The Site Works

Canonical entries live in entries/*.qmd.

Each entry includes structured metadata plus a short ## Why it matters note. README.md and index.qmd are generated from those entry files, and screenshots are stored in assets/screenshots/.

The Editorial Policy explains inclusion, exclusion, review, AI-use, and removal criteria. The Contribution Guidelines explain how to suggest resources or submit technical changes.

Contributors

The contributors graph records repository activity. Entry-level authors, contributors, and reviewed_by fields provide more specific credit when responsibility can be verified.
