Why it matters

Books as Data brings together more than 750,000 records of prints from 1700 to 1900 held by the university and central libraries of Basel, Bern, Lucerne, and Zurich. About 450,000 volumes are searchable in full text, and about 180,000 digitised works are linked through IIIF.

The platform treats books as research data. Researchers can download metadata, full texts, and images in bulk, cite single pages with persistent links, and follow the export guides and datasheet in the project wiki. This makes it a strong base for text and data mining on the intellectual and social life of German-speaking Switzerland.
