Chapter 2, A Place for Plant Data (Loukissas 2019, 27–54). Session 6 reads the same chapter from a different angle.
We read this text together in the session.
Reading summary
Loukissas uses the Arnold Arboretum to show that data have complex attachments to place. Plant records are tied to living specimens, tags, collecting histories, institutional practices, maps, catalogues, and databases. Data can be about, in, and from a place. These relations shape how the records can be interpreted.
In class
Students trace the relations between plant, place, label, record, database, and visualization.
Output
A map of data-place relations.
