Chapter 7, Local Ends (Loukissas 2019, 189–96).

We read this text together in the session.

Reading summary

Loukissas returns to the main claim: we do not understand data if we do not understand their setting. He contrasts common goals of data work, such as orientation, access, analysis, and optimization, with local ends such as place making, restraint, reflexivity, and contestation. He also argues that open data need guides that explain data settings, not only files and technical documentation.

In class

Students turn these ideas into ethical and practical criteria for their own work.

Output

A set of ethical and practical criteria.
